Background checks in Cameroon protect employers, landlords, lenders and investors from the most expensive hiring and contracting mistakes. RISCAM has verified candidates, tenants and partners across Cameroon since 2002, with offices in Douala and Yaoundé and a process built around what can lawfully be confirmed in this country.
Cameroonian law and basic ethics put limits on screening. We do not access protected medical records, we do not run unlawful surveillance on candidates, and we are transparent about records that simply cannot be confirmed through legitimate channels. A provider who promises everything should worry you. Findings gathered illegally can poison a dismissal case or a court file.
Our reports state clearly what was confirmed, what could not be confirmed, and through which type of source. That honesty is what makes the report usable in front of counsel, auditors and courts. Read more in our guide on what background checks can and cannot verify legally in Cameroon.
The cost of a bad hire is rarely the salary. It is the fraud a dishonest accountant commits in month eight. It is the customer data a fake IT contractor walks away with. It is the reputational damage when a manager turns out to have been dismissed twice before for the same misconduct.
Certificate fraud is a persistent reality in the Cameroonian market. So are invented employment histories and references answered by friends posing as former supervisors. A structured check catches most of this for a small fraction of what one incident costs. Our article on why background checks are critical in Cameroon today covers the trends in detail.
Screening is one layer. When a check surfaces a serious discrepancy, clients often escalate to a corporate investigation. When the question is about a company rather than a person, the work becomes vendor due diligence with registry and site verification. When a document is the issue, our document forensics team takes over. One provider across these needs means one confidential relationship and consistent reporting standards.
We verify nationwide from our Douala (BP 9654) and Yaoundé (BP 1600) hubs. Standard single subject checks typically complete within one week. Enhanced checks involving field verification or multiple institutions take longer and are scoped in writing first. Urgent timelines can often be accommodated; tell us at intake.
Tell us the role or relationship you need screened and we will propose the right check level, timeline and fee in writing.

Identity confirmation plus one structured reference. Suited to short term roles and positions without access to cash, stock or data. Completes fastest and costs least, and it still removes the most casual category of misrepresentation.
Identity, full employment history confirmed with previous employers, education verified with issuing institutions and two structured references. The right level for most permanent hires. Most discrepancies we find live at this level: invented job titles, stretched employment dates and certificates the school never issued.
Everything in the standard level plus registry research for directorships and business interests, field verification of the declared address and discreet reputation inquiry where the role justifies it. This is the level for finance roles, senior management, signing authority and any position where one person could move significant value alone.
A discrepancy is information, not an automatic rejection. A three month gap a candidate explained honestly is very different from a concealed dismissal for theft. Our reports separate confirmed facts from unconfirmable items and flag genuine contradictions, so you can weigh each finding in context. We are available after delivery to walk through what a specific finding means and whether it justifies deeper investigation.
Equally, a clean report is a real asset. It documents that you hired with diligence, which matters if an employment dispute ever reaches the labour inspector or a court. Keep reports in the personnel file for exactly that reason.
None of these is rare. Across screening engagements, a meaningful share of candidate files contain at least one material discrepancy, which is precisely why the check exists.
If you are being screened for a role, the process is straightforward and respectful. You will have given written consent. We contact the institutions and employers you declared, we verify rather than interrogate, and we report facts rather than opinions. Honest candidates lose nothing in screening; the process exists to protect them too, by keeping fabricated competition out of the shortlist.
Screening files contain personal information and we treat them accordingly. Reports go to the authorised client contact only, files are retained securely for a defined period and then destroyed, and our staff work on a need to know basis. We do not resell, pool or reuse candidate data between clients.
Should we screen before or after the offer?
Make the offer conditional on verification. The candidate has certainty, the start date holds and the check runs inside the notice period without delaying anyone.
Can we screen existing staff before a promotion?
Yes, within legal and contractual limits, and it is wise before moving anyone into signing authority or cash responsibility. Tell us the role and we will scope a proportionate check.
What if the candidate refuses consent?
Refusal is information. Honest candidates rarely object to declared, lawful verification, and a refusal for a trust position deserves a careful conversation before any offer.
If you have a hire pending, send us the role and the candidate’s consented file and we will confirm scope, fee and turnaround the same day. If you are building a screening programme, we will review your roles, propose check levels per tier and set up a standing arrangement so every future check starts in hours. Either way, the first conversation is confidential and costs nothing, and you will know exactly what the verification will tell you before you commit to it.
Screening is the cheapest decision insurance available to any organisation in Cameroon. One unchecked hire in a trust position can undo years of careful growth, and one week of verification prevents it. Tell us who you are about to trust, and we will tell you what the records actually say.
Start with the role you are filling this month. Send the candidate file, receive the scope the same day and have verified facts on your desk before the offer becomes binding. Hiring on verified facts is a habit, and like every good habit, the only hard part is the first time.
